In today’s spiritual community, there are so many different crystals to choose from. The main two categories we choose from are raw/rough and smooth. Raw or rough stones are the stones that are mostly asymmetric, and they can sometimes appear as a rock. Smooth crystals and stones, however, are usually symmetric and have a smooth and shiny finishing. It’s because smooth stones are modified to appear ‘beautiful.’ And it’s actually why I love and enjoy raw and rough stones because not only do they come straight from the Earth, but they are beautiful in their own way. This is no shade to smooth stones, as I believe they all serve their own unique purpose. Tiger’s Eye, for example MUST be smoothed since it’s natural ‘raw’ form is toxic — asbestos. They’re also perfect to be used for beaded jewelry such as bracelets, necklaces, and rings. Although I appreciate and use both in my creations, raw stones are my preferred pick because they’re often overlooked. & If you’ve been following my journey from Facebook, Threads, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, X, or even Substack, you’d know by now that I enjoy the overlooked, the underdogs, and the under-appreciated. You’d know that I value most things that the average person does not.

To be quite frank, Raw crystals/stones remind me a lot of Black people as a whole… our history and upcoming. How Black women are expected to wear straight, smooth hair, and men are expected to have a low cut in order to fit the beauty standard of society, when in reality, we are the beauty standard. This is the same as Raw/rough stones. Because if you think about it, nature doesn’t need to be modified to be seen as beautiful. Beauty itself is in the eye of the beholder; therefore, it says more about the person who does or does not see beauty… Because beauty is in everything.

As a woman who absolutely loves and adores Mother Nature, Mother Earth, and all the natural remnants of the Universe, I absolutely loved the idea of creating luxury jewelry from raw beauty– if you think about it, that is the beauty in it all.
